Synopsis[]

Rusty visits the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town to try catching Ghost-type Pokémon. After hearing a warning from the Lavender Town Lady, he enters the building, shaken. The ghost of a deceased Zubat appears, explaining that he was the Zubat Rusty drowned while trying to teach him Surf.

Another spirit appears, Bidoofs 1-16, 16 different Bidoofs who died when Rusty tried to capture them in one Pokéball. The Bidoof spirits shout that Pokéballs can only hold one Pokémon. More of his deceased Pokémon appear, including a Grimer he washed down a drain, a Tentacool he tried to plug in, and Cubone and Venomoth who both died in his battle with Blaine and his Growlithe. The ghosts say they were waiting for him. Rusty thinks it is to encourage him, but Cubone tells him to give up on being a trainer and that he was born to work in a deli.

After the rest of his Pokémon explain how Rusty killed them, Rusty thinks his deceased Pokémon came to haunt him because they missed Rusty. They converge on Rusty, but are stopped but a new spirit, Grandpa Crispin, Rusty's grandfather. He tells the ghosts that Rusty is naive and not old enough to realize his actions, and requests for them to guide and help him to become a better person...until Rusty decides to capture him with a Pokéball, much to Crispin's complete dismay. Rusty claims that Crispin is a "Ghost/Grandpa"-type Pokémon, and he is never going to use Crispin's Pokéball.
